Dr. Laura Curiel, P.Eng., has revolutionized education in biomedical engineering, shaping the next generation of innovators. As associate head of the biomedical engineering department at the University of Calgary, Dr. Curiel has played a pivotal role in developing and launching the biomedical engineering major, fostering academic excellence through her innovative teaching methods and visionary leadership.
With expertise in high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy, Dr. Curiel bridges groundbreaking research with education, mentoring students in areas such as neurostimulation and therapeutic devices. She emphasizes independent learning, critical thinking, and teamwork, encouraging students to explore diverse problem-solving approaches. By incorporating coding tools, such as GitHub, she prepares students for real-world collaboration while refining their technical and professional skills.
This dedication to teaching excellence extends to mentoring underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Through initiatives such as the Women in Data Science Conference and high school mentorship programs, she inspires students to pursue careers in engineering.
