Scoring Points for Community Building

David Walter Maffitt, P.Eng.

David Walter Maffitt’s journey of community service began in Calgary, where his dedication to safety and connection led him to serve as block captain for the Neighborhood Block Watch. This commitment expanded into an enthusiasm for youth empowerment through sports. Maffitt embraced the role of youth coach for his son’s soccer team, guiding local children to build teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.

In 2006, Maffitt and his family relocated to Airdrie, where he remained committed to his involvement in youth sports. He coached his daughter’s soccer teams and Airdrie Little League baseball.

His passion for leadership flourished as vice president and then president of the Airdrie Minor Basketball Association (AMBA). During this tenure, he created an inclusive 3x3 spring basketball league, enabling all youth players at all levels to participate and grow.

He was secretary for the Calgary Minor Basketball Association from 2012 to 2014 and capped off his service with the AMBA by chairing basketball for the 2014 Alberta Summer Games. He delivered a successful event across four venues and recruited and trained 75 volunteers.

Maffitt spent 11 years on the Volunteer Airdrie Society Board, six years with Karate Alberta, three with Volunteer Alberta, and one with the Airdrie Sports Council.

Beyond sports, Maffitt champions education and professional development. As founder and president of Phoenix Energy Marketing Consultants Inc., he built a reputation for excellence in the Canadian oil and gas industry. Under his leadership, Phoenix established a scholarship at the University of Calgary for chemical engineering students, which Maffitt continues to support through his new venture, Minerva Energy Marketing Solutions Inc.

“As professional engineers, we can change the communities around us by applying our problem-solving training, technical skills, and work experience. We all have a duty to support society at every opportunity.”

Maffitt’s commitment to community service exemplifies the spirit of APEGA’s Community Service Summit Award. His dedication to uplifting youth embodies the highest standards of community impact. By inspiring young people to believe in their potential, David builds stronger, more connected communities.
