The Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act empowers APEGA to regulate the engineering and geoscience professions in Alberta. Currently, the Act authorizes APEGA to investigate unprofessional conduct and unskilled practice if a complaint is received in writing.

On August 2, a condominium complex in Fort Saskatchewan was evacuated after an engineering assessment determined it was structurally unsound. APEGA confirmed that those responsible for the structural design had registrations that had since been cancelled.

As part of an effort to increase interprovincial free trade, the Government of Alberta has announced that it will make it easier for skilled workers in other Canadian jurisdictions to practise in Alberta. The government aims to improve processes and strengthen language as a way to decrease the time it takes professional regulatory bodies to recognize out-of-province professional credentials.

Ladislav Mihaly is appealing the Court of Queen’s Bench January 26, 2016 decision to uphold APEGA's appeal. Justice Ross reversed the decision of the Alberta Human Rights Commission (AHRC) tribunal and also dismissed Mr. Mihaly’s cross appeal.

A Court of Queen’s Bench Justice has upheld APEGA’s appeal of an Alberta Human Rights Commission (AHRC) tribunal decision in allegations made by Ladislav Mihaly. Madam Justice Ross also dismissed Mihaly’s cross-appeal.

In November 2014, then-APEGA President Dr. Jim Gilliland, P.Eng., resigned in light of a potential conflict of interest. An APEGA investigative committee panel report has concluded that there was no evidence of unprofessional practice by Gilliland or his employer.
