Draft Expert Witness Guideline Now Open for Feedback

When licensed professionals are called upon to act as expert witnesses, whether during a preliminary investigation, in court, or before quasi-judicial bodies, they play a vital role helping decision makers by providing specialized knowledge beyond the administrative tribunal’s or court’s expertise. To support licensed professionals who are acting as expert witnesses, APEGA produced the Professional Member as a Witness guideline in 2003. APEGA has substantially revised the guideline, now titled Licensed Professional as an Expert Witness, and is inviting registrants and the public to review and provide feedback on the draft guideline.
This guideline outlines key considerations for licensed professionals who are providing expert testimony. Although each proceeding is unique, the guideline presents professional practice advice and best practice recommendations that will help licensed professionals understand their role.
From December 2, 2024, until February 14, 2025, registrants and the public were encouraged to review the draft and share their insights to help us shape a guideline that upholds public interest and professional integrity. Now that feedback has been received, submissions will be reviewed for consideration before finalizing the guideline for approval. Thank you to those who participated in this important part of self-regulation.
