We are proud to congratulate APEGA Director of Member Engagement & Communications Gisela Hippolt-Squair, BA, FGC (Hon.), for her poem “The Hand that Wears the Ring,” which was chosen as the new English poem for the Obligation Ceremony by the Corporation of the Seven Wardens.

As 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Obligation Ceremony, also known as the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer, the Corporation announced they would update the poems that are read at the ceremony and put out a call for poets. On November 24, 2024, they announced the winning English and French selections from their Canada-wide competition.

This poem will replace one by Rudyard Kipling that has been used since 1925 and better reflects the Corporation’s desire to make the ritual meaningful and inclusive for all candidates who participate.

The Obligation Ceremony is administered independently by the Corporation of the Seven Wardens.
