APEGA to Appeal Alberta Human Rights Tribunal Decision
The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) will file a notice of appeal to the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench against a decision made by an Alberta Human Rights Commission tribunal on Thursday, February 6, 2014. The decision relates to the hearing known as Ladislav Mihaly vs. The Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA). The name of the association changed in March 2012.
“APEGA has great respect for the Alberta Human Rights Commission and its process,” says APEGA CEO Mark Flint, P.Eng. “However, we disagree with aspects of the decision and believe that an appeal is in the public interest.”
“As the APEGA Registrar, I remain convinced that the application process is fair and equitable. Regardless of where applicants for licensure have studied, the same rigorous standards apply and ought to apply,” says APEGA Registrar Carol Moen, P.Eng.
Lowering the standards used to examine whether an individual has the appropriate education and experience to be licensed would result in an unacceptable increased risk to public safety and wellbeing.
