Calgary Branch Luncheon | Drilling Automation - Successes and Challenges

12 Mar 2025
Register by March 5, 2025

Automation is quickly becoming standard in the drilling industry. With the advent of AutoDrillers and now advanced AC rigs, there is a new realm of opportunities to improve drilling performance and consistency. Improvements require a rigorous engineering methodology. We will review the advancements in rig equipment and technology, challenges deploying automation for drilling optimization, and dig into the factors determining success. The automation system searches for optimal, efficient drilling parameters, while evaluating drilling dynamics in real time to mitigate downhole dysfunctions. Data from the automation system can be reviewed to further push the limits where there's room for opportunity, or if a change is needed to reduce the risk of failure. The output of this evaluation and analysis closes the loop on an iterative workflow to continually improve drilling performance.
