Webinar | The Energy Transition is Eating Alberta's Lunch

The global energy system is massively complex, which makes understanding the energy transition difficult at best. Will it be slow (OPEC), fast (IEA), or very fast (RMI)? What are the risks for the Canadian oil and gas industry and its epicentre in Alberta? What are the opportunities? Energy journalist Markham Hislop has created a simple model that helps energy professionals organize the flood of information they grapple with daily. The energy future isn't inevitable, but the principal trends suggest the energy transition will significantly change the Alberta energy industries far sooner than many believe. Most importantly, Markham believes that people of good faith can enjoy profitable discussions even when they disagree. His presentation will be based upon theory, data, and evidence. And he is happy to engage with APEGA members on that basis.

The views and opinions expressed by the speaker are solely their own and do not necessarily reflect the views, opinions, or policies of APEGA. APEGA does not endorse or assume responsibility for any of the comments made by the speaker during this presentation.

About the Presenter

Markham HislopForty years ago, Markham Hislop's graduate thesis was titled "The Transition from Horses and Steam to Power-farming (tractors and combines) in Saskatchewan 1900 to 1930." This was his introduction to energy transition theory and analysis. He has applied those insights throughout his career, including five years in the North America oil patch, especially over the past 16 years as an energy journalist. Markham has interviewed thousands of global energy experts for his Energi Talks podcast, columns, investigative reporting, and video news stories. He provides a unique perspective on the implications of the energy transition for Alberta. The bottom line is that the transition is proceeding much faster than Alberta realizes.
