Pre-Graduate Work Experience
Applicants applying for a Professional Member or Licensee designation may receive work experience credit from the APEGA Board of Examiners for experience gained before completing their geoscience, geophysics, or geology undergraduate degree.
The APEGA Board of Examiners may give up to 12 months credit for geoscience work obtained after the completion of three (3) years of acceptable post-secondary education in geoscience, geophysics or geology. This experience may be at a technologist or professional level.
Pre-Graduate Work Experience Credit can only be credited once the applicant is academically qualified. The review for Pre-Graduate Work Experience Credit is separate from the academic review.
Types of Work Experience Credit
There are two categories of pre-graduate experience:
- Co-op and internship programs
- Summer work or other work experience
Requesting Pre-Graduate Work Experience
To request Pre-Graduate Experience Credit, applicants must complete and submit a Work Experience Record (WER) covering the period of their pre-graduate work experience. It must contain the following information:
In the top section of the WER record provide:
- The name of the employer
- Dates work for that employer
- Position title
- Where the work was performed
- The name and designation of the supervisor
- The name and designation of the reference who took responsibility for the work
- The reference contact information (e-mail address or mailing address)
Through the drop-down select either Employed-Full Time or Employed-Part Time
- Do not choose student for this work record
The applicant will enter a brief overview of their position
The applicant will then choose whether the pre-grad experience was with at a professional level, technical level, or both
- If they choose both, they will have to divide their total months between profession and technical
The applicant will then fill out the details of their position in the professional level, technical level, or both.
Part-time experience that overlaps academic studies is typically not considered as acceptable experience.
