Academic Requirements for Member-in-Training
Applicants are required to provide their academics to be assessed for academic equivalency.
Basic guidelines regarding the acceptability of certain academic programs can be found below:
- Acceptable course equivalents and syllabi
- The World Education Services (WES) Degree Equivalency Tool
All applicants will be evaluated against the APEGA syllabus in engineering or geoscience. Applicants who do not meet the academic requirements could be prescribed exams to make up for identified academic deficiencies, asked to write confirmatory exams to confirm the quality, depth, and breadth of their education, or refused.
Academics for Canadian Graduates
Applicants applying for Engineering or Geoscientist in Training with APEGA are required to provide their complete transcripts that show the conferral (graduation) date.
Transcripts can be mailed to our Edmonton Office from the granting institution, hand delivered as long as the transcripts are in the unopened (sealed) university envelope, or can be sent to APEGA through a secure, digital distribution system (i.e. myCreds).
Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB)
For degree programs accredited through the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), applicants will only need to provide the transcripts for that degree. They do not need to provide their transfer credits, certificates, or diplomas as support documentation.
Non-CEAB Programs
If an applicant completed a degree in an engineering program that was not part of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), or a geoscience program, they will need to have the following transcripts sent to APEGA from the degree granting institution:
- Conferred undergraduate degree transcripts
- Conferred post-graduate transcripts (if applicable)
- Transfer credits (if applicable)
World Education Services (WES) for International Graduates
All applicants with international education are required to provide a World Education Services (WES) ICAP Course by Course Report. WES is an international credential evaluation service designed by Immigration and Citizenship Canada to provide educational credential evaluations for education completed outside of Canada. WES is the only international credential service recognized by APEGA, and only the International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Course by Course Report will be accepted.

All transcripts must be included as part of the WES ICAP Course by Course Report, including transfer credits. APEGA does not accept industry training (i.e., journeyman) certificates, professional development, or continuing education.
WES ICAP Course by Course Report vs. APEGA's Board of Examiners
WES ICAP Course by Course Report:
- Verifies the authenticity of your academic documents
- Completes any translations required of your academics
- Establishes the equivalent level of your academic credentials compared with the Canadian university system
APEGA's Board of Examiners:
- Reviews your degree to ensure it is a degree in engineering or geoscience.
- Confirms the acceptability of the course content and performance of your degree.
- Ensures that your degree meets the legal requirements for licensure.
How to Obtain a World Education Services Report
To obtain a WES ICAP Course by Course Report:
- Start an application through myAPEGA and receive an APEGA ID number. This APEGA ID number will be required to order a WES ICAP Course by Course Report.
- In the Online Application System, when completing the 12 steps of the application, after the education has been added in Step 5, follow the instructions to continue to the WES website for the next step of the application process.
- Follow the instructions provided by WES. If an applicant already has an evaluation report from WES, they may need to update the report to an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) Course by Course Report.
- WES will send the completed evaluation report to APEGA electronically. Physical copes will not be accepted.
Applicants are required to monitor the status of their report through the WES Portal and notify APEGA at [email protected] of any delays in receiving the report. Applicants have ninety (90) days from the date they submit and pay for their application to provide all of their academics to APEGA.
